DOC'S PRE-SEASON POWER RANKINGS:

1. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS:
Why wouldn't the Pats occupy the top spot? Get over all of this talk that they are still recovering from their unexpected loss to the Giants in the Super Bowl. With Brady, Moss, Welker, Maroney and a top five defense, they are still the team to beat.

2. INDIANAPOLIS COLTS:
Peyton and friends will be in the mix and are still a good bet to get to Tampa. So much of their success will depend on the health and performance of their defense.

3. DALLAS COWBOYS:
The Boys are loaded for bear and the expectation is that they'll get over their playoff issues and finally get back to the Super Bowl. On paper, this could be the most talented team in the game but until Tony Romo proves he can get them there and their defense plays the kind of "team" D it takes to get to the bowl, the Cowboys will still be pretenders in some peoples eyes.

4. JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS:
I am officially on the wagon. With the upgrades on offense and the addition of Derrick Harvey and Drayton Florence to an already loaded defense, you see why the Jags are such a sexy pick. Don't annoy me with questions about David Garrard, the guy is a winner and is most certainly a starting quarterback in this league!

5. SAN DIEGO CHARGERS:
The Bolts proved in the AFC championship game that they have arrived and are for real. The big question, can they overcome the injuries that LT and Philip Rivers will be trying to heal from going into camp. Depth at key positions could also keep this team from being a legit Super Bowl contender.

6. NEW YORK GIANTS:
What, you thought I forgot about the G-Men. Don't get me wrong, what they did in the Super Bowl was remarkable and it was certainly the biggest upset in NFL history. But with no Strahan and issues with Plex and Jeremy Shockey, its hard to imagine that this will be the same team that walked off the field in Arizona in February. I just don't know if the hunger and desire are still there?

7. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS:
Mike Holmgren's last go-around needs to be a good one and with the NFC being in constant flux, who's to say the Seahawks can't position themselves to send him out a winner. Much of this team's success will depend on a revamped ground attack.

8. PITTSBURGH STEELERS:
With Big Ben and a potent running game in place, the Steelers will be in the mix come January but not upgrading the offensive line and a vulnerable secondary could keep this team from being a contender in the AFC.

9. GREEN BAY PACKERS:
No Brett favre doesn't necessarily mean no chance. Obviously Favre will be missed in more ways than we know but the pieces are in place for Aaron Rodgers to succeed. Its unfair to say that if Green bay flops it'll be his fault! This is a talented team.

10. CLEVELAND BROWNS:
The Brownies are loaded with talent especially on offense and with a revamped defense, they could be a darkhorse contender. The only problem for me is, I just don't get that vibe from this team. Not drafting a back that can produce and spell Jamal Lewis was a mistake.

11. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS:
The Saints underachieved last season but you have to ask yourself, were they that good? Improvements on defense should help along with a healthy Deuce McAllister but the key to this offense is Reggie Bush. If he finally becomes the so-called "weapon" he was supposed to be, look out!

12. PHILADEPHIA EAGLES:
With a healthy Donovan McNabb, the Eagles could suprise. Brian Westbrook maybe the game's most complete player and if the defense returns to their championship form, don't sleep on a Philly revival!

13. ARIZONA CARDINALS:
This team is loaded with talent at the skill positions but with questions at quarterback and a defense that is still developing, its tough to say if they could be anything more than an 8-8 team again. Darkhorse in the truest sense!

14. NEW YORK JETS:
Remember, this is based on off-season activity, not what these teams were a year ago. Both Eric Mangini and GM Mike Tannenbaum know this is a big season for them, so they spent big. On paper I think team is good enough to "compete" in the AFC. Notice I didn't say, win the AFC or AFC East. Instability at quarterback could be the difference.

15. WASHINGTON REDSKINS:
I know most people especially in D.C are still shaking their heads over the Jim Zorn hire but this is going to be a better hire than people think! Zorn is loose and fair to his players and he comes from the Holmgren coaching tree so you know the offense will excel. The pieces are in place for this team to take the next step. Its all on Jason Campbell.

16. TENNESSEE TITANS:
The Vince Young experience moves onto its second offense coordinator in Mike Heimerdinger. If he can make Young more effcient in the passing game, the rest of the pieces are in place for this team to at least make a wild card run.

17. DENVER BRONCOS:
Mike Shanahan is under some serious pressure to return this team to playoff status. In year's past the roster was good enough, this collection is questionable at best.

18. TAMPA BAY BUCS:
If recent Buccaneer history has taught us anything, this should be a down year for Jon Gruden's crew. Why not think that way, in his tenure in Tampa he has never posted back to back winning seasons! The roster lacks the kind of difference makers necessary for this team to take the next step.

19. MINNESOTA VIKINGS:
The Vikes focused on upgrading a defense that was great against the run but couldn't rush the passer. Jared Allen will solve that problem but Minny maybe looking in from the outside if Tavares Jackson doesn't develop.

20. BALTIMORE RAVENS:
John Harbaugh will bring a different approach than Brian Billick and it could work with a veteran team. The problem is this team's stars ala Ray Lewis are getting older and the quarterback situation is too up in the air to consider them legit contenders.

21. BUFFALO BILLS:
The Bills are continuing to stockpile young talent and it will eventually bear fruit but the AFC is too tough a conference for this young, untested team.

22. CAROLINA PANTHERS:
This could be John Fox's last chance to salvage what has been a sinking ship the past two years. Key additions offensively should help and a talented defense led by emerging star Jon Beason means this team will have a chance to compete. Competing unfortunately may not be enough to save Fox and GM Marty Hurney.

23. CHICAGO BEARS:
Defensively, the Bears still bolster an elite defense but question marks at quarterback and running back means this team may struggle to win six games. Going back to the well with Rex Grossman could be the biggest mistake they made.

24. ST. LOUIS RAMS:
Scott Linehan is hoping that former OC Al Saunders and QB coach Terry Shea can help the Greatest Show on Turf regain its previous form. The talent is place offensively but unless Chris Long wins defensive rookie of the year, the Ram defense will prevent this team from becoming a serious contender.

25. DETROIT LIONS:
Now Rod Marinelli has his kind of team. The question is, Can the Lions turn it around? The answer is no simply because Jon Kitna is too inconsistent, the running game has too many questions and although Ernie Sims is the WLB in Marinelli's version of the Tampa 4-3, none of the other parts as talented as those Bucs defenses. 7-9 is likely.

26. CINCINNATI BENGALS:
The talented Bengals will once again flounder in mediocrity thanks to a defense that may take twenty years to improve and fully develop.

27. OAKLAND RAIDERS:
The Raiders are loaded with talent and plenty of money has been spent by the cript keeper but anything more than 7-9 will be a miricle. Does Al Davis have enough time to go through a complete rebuilding process?

28. HOUSTON TEXANS:
Gary Kubiak is helping this team take meaningful steps to becoming a playoff team but when your bigesst off-season acquistion is naming Kyle Shanahan offensive coordinator, your not doing enough to improve. Bob McNair needs to open those deep pockets.

29. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS:
The Chiefs are in full rebuilding mode and it makes you wonder how long it will be before Larry Johnson starts bitching and asks out.

30. SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS:
Mike Martz is a good football coach but last time I checked, he's not a miricle worker. Alex Smith is a bust and unless he turns Shaun Hill into Kurt Warner, the Niners will struggle to win six games. There is talent in place but with no quarterback, its business as usual.

31. MIAMI DOLPHINS:
The Fish will be more competitive than people think because they will run the football, play good D and limit the turnovers. With all that said, there isn't enough talent on the roster to do better than max, 5-11.

32. ATLANTA FALCONS:
The Falcons can compete but to think they can turn it around in one off-season would be foolish. If Matt Ryan plays early and he stays upright, the Blackbirds could be competitive. Running the ball and playing good D will be essential.
