2009 NFL Draft: Top Prospects

1. Miami Dolphins -- Jake Long, OT, Michigan

Needs: OT, CB, WR, QB, G

In getting Long, the Dolphins added the key ingredient in Bill Parcells’ recipe for rebuilding a program. Although they overpaid for Long, he is going to be a bookend for them for at left tackle for 10-12 years.

2. St. Louis Rams -- Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU

Record: 3-13 | Needs: DE, DT, WR, C, OLB, OT
The Rams need to develop a presence upfront to play along with Adam Carriker and Dorsey fits the bill to a tee. He is the perfect fit player necessary to play the 3 technique tackle in the 4-3 and he has Pro Bowl upside.

3. Atlanta Falcons -- Matt Ryan, QB, Boston College

Record: 4-12 | Needs: DT, OT, CB, QB, TE
The Falcons are going to want Dorsey and if they can’t get him they’ll either move the pick or draft Ryan who would fill their need for a Franchise quarterback. GM Thomas Dimitroff is going to want to build inside out like the Patriots but unless they take Long or Ellis, Ryan makes the most sense.

4. Oakland Raiders -- Chris Long, DE Virginia

Record: 4-12 | Needs: DE, DT, OT,G, SLB, WR, RB
I didn’t make this decision based on the fact that Chris is Howie’s son. The bottom line here, they need a defensive lineman that can pressure the quarterback and Long is the best fit. Now you know Al Davis is going to want the flashier McFadden and his justification is going to be the fact that Oakland has invested heavily in their defensive line, but someone has to tell Al this makes too much sense.

5. Kansas City Chiefs -- Vernon Gholston, DE Ohio St.

Record: 4-12 | Needs: OT, CB, DT, G, C, WR, QB
The fact that K.C traded Jared Allen makes no sense but with 13 picks overall and a top five pick, they can begin to rebuild their roster and move forward. Gholston is versatile in that he can play with his hand up or down and DC Gunther Cunningham is going to love his versatility because he’ll be able to use in myriad of ways. Don’t be surprised if they move up to get Ryan however or if they move and target either Rivers or Ellis.

6. New York Jets -- Darren McFadden, RB Arkansas

Record: 4-12 | Needs: DE, WR, RB, FS, ILB, CB
The Jets need to continue to re-work their front seven on defense but with Dorsey, Gholston and Long gone and with McFadden sitting their, they have no choice but to take the talented but misguided back. OC Brian Schottenheimer and Bill Callahan can come up with different situational packages for McFadden and he would give the Jets the playmaker they sorely lack in a division where you need to outscore the Patriots to beat. Trading out is also a possibility.

7. New England Patriots (from 5-11 S.F.) -- Keith Rivers, OLB, USC

Record: 16-0 | Needs: ILB, OLB, CB, ROT, TE
Unlike other “so-called” experts, I believe the Pats will move this pick and don’t be surprised if their dance partner is the Cowboys. If they don’t Rivers makes too much sense here especially with Long and Gholston off the board. They could also go corner but Jenkins and the recently rising Leodis McKelvin are still too high here. Rivers can transition from a 4-3 Under outside linebacker to a 3-4 “Mike” backer.

8. Baltimore Ravens -- Leodis McKelvin, CB Troy

Record: 5-11 | Needs: CB, QB, OT, OLB/DE, ILB
The ravens need a quarterback, especially now that Steve McNair has left the building. They also need a corner and the versatile McKelvin is an explosive playmaker that would give them a good man to man cover corner as well as an explosive kick returner. They would love if Ryan fell to them, but more than likely, that isn’t going to happen so they’ll stay put and grab the best player available.

9. Cincinnati Bengals -- Sedrick Ellis, DT, USC

Record: 7-9 | Needs: NT, OT, DE, LB, WR, C
This is the pick where things could get interesting especially with New Orleans looking to move up. Cincy hasn’t had a dominant defensive tackle since dare I say, the Tim Krumrie days! Ellis is a big, active shade tackle type who is an ideal fit at weak side defensive tackle. If he’s still sitting here, New Orleans could make them an offer but the Bengals stay put and fill a major need.

10. New Orleans Saints -- Mike Jenkins, CB, South Florida

Record: 6-9 | Needs: CB, DT, LB, TE, ROT, S

The Saints want to draft either a big linebacker to play opposite newly acquired Jonathan Vilma or a defensive tackle that can play inside, man the 3 technique spot and protect Will Smith and Charles Grant. They’ll try valiantly to move up to land either Dorsey or Ellis but if they can’t, Jenkins or McKelvin if he’s here would make the most sense.

11.
Buffalo Bills -- Devin Thomas, WR, Michigan State

Record: 7-9 | Needs: WR, TE, CB, DE, FS
Thomas has moved up and become the number one receiver in this class and his size speed combination would be the ideal fit for a Bills team looking for a complement to Lee Evans.

12. Denver Broncos -- Ryan Clady, OT Boise St.

Record: 7-9 | Needs: OT, DT, WR MLB, S

Clady has all of the physical tools to become and elite tackle but questions about his work ethic has certainly impacted his draft status. Has good feet and he can jump to the second level quickly which would make him ideal in Denver’s version of the zone running game. Trading down and adding a corner or wide receiver could also be a possibility.

13. Carolina Panthers -- Derrick Harvey, DE, Florida

Record: 7-9 | Needs: OT, FS, DE, RB, TE
With the recent retirement of Mike Rucker, the Panthers need to get that can play across Julius Peppers. Quarterback and offensive line are other needs but having the ability to get to the quarterback is so crucial in a pass happy league.

14. Chicago Bears -- Chris Williams, OT, Vanderbilt

Record: 7-9 | Needs: OT, QB, RB, WR, G, S
The Bears need to replace Fred Miller and Williams is a viable option for Chicago at this spot. Chicago also likes Pitt’s Jeff Otah but he is a bit flat-footed and slow whereas Williams is more athletic and can play left tackle.

15. Detroit Lions -- Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Illinois

Record: 7-9 | Needs: RB, LB, OT, DE, DT
With Kevin Jones and T.J Duckett out the door and Tatum Bell the only back on the roster, local product Mendenhall makes sense. We like Jonathan Stewart better but scouts around the league love Mendenhall’s versatility and he has shown he can carry the load.

16. Arizona Cardinals -- Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, CB Tenn. St.

Record: 8-8 | Needs: CB, FS, RB, OT, WR, S
With Antrel Rolle possibly moving to safety, the Cards need to address their back seven and the raw but talented Cromartie fit’s the bill. He may not have the ceiling that his cousin Antonio has but he is a big corner who is fluid and has a knack for getting to the ball.

17. Kansas City (from 8-8 Minnesota) -- Jeff Otah, OT, Pittsburgh

Record: 8-8 | Needs: QB, OT, CB, WR, DT
The Chiefs have positioned themselves to rebuild along both fronts and Otah should complete that transition. He is mammoth tackle who is a grinder in the ground game and can hold up against bigger defensive ends. May have to start at right tackle until he develops.

18. Houston Texans -- Aqib Talib, CB Kansas

Record: 8-8 | Needs: CB, OT, DE, G,C, S
With Dunta Robinson on the shelf until mid-season at the earliest, Houston needs to find a corner that can start in his absence and play opposite him when he comes back. Talib has good size and instincts and plays a smart game. Vulnerable over the top but he could be effective as a Cover Two squat corner.

19. Philadelphia Eagles -- James Hardy, WR Indiana

Record: 8-8 | Needs: WR, LB, OT, G, S, DE
Hardy has shot up draft boards across the league and with size, skill combination is an attractive option for a West Coast offense like Andy Reid‘s. He would give the Eagles the viable red-zone option they have lacked since T.O left town.

20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers -- Brandon Albert, OT Virginia

Record: 9-7 | Needs: WR, OT, CB, QB, DT
Jon Gruden would love to take a wide receiver here and it could be either Hardy or Jackson but if they don’t, Albert makes sense here because he could play either guard or tackle. With his stock slipping a bit, he would be a steal in this spot. Otah, Clady and Williams could also slip and possibly go here.

21. Washington Redskins -- Phillip Merling, DE, Clemson

Record: 9-7 | Needs: WR, S, DE, OL, CB
The Redskins need a wide receiver and they could go with either Jackson or Sweed here but the more likely scenario is they address their need along the D-Line. Merling is a terrific pass rusher who can get up the field and is a perfect fit as a 9 technique front side defensive end.

22. Dallas Cowboys (from 10-6 CLE) -- Felix Jones, RB, Arkansas

Record: 13-3 | Needs: CB, RB, WR, ILB, S
The Cowboys have enough needs that they could go in any other direction here but Jones makes the most sense. He is the perfect complement to Marion Barber because of his running style and he would be a great complement to Pacman in the return game. Don’t be surprised if Dallas packages these two picks to move into the top twelve.

23. Pittsburgh Steelers -- Calais Campbell, DE Miami (Fla)

Record: 10-6 | Needs: DE (3-4), OT, WR, G, FS
Campbell is more ideally suited to play the 9 technique defensive end position in the 4-3 but at 6-7 280, he has the size and the wingspan to play in Pittsburgh’s gap control 3-4. Head coach Mike Tomlin wants to switch to some 40 fronts in certain situations and the versatile Campbell would allow him to go back and forth.

24. Tennessee Titans -- Limas Sweed, WR, Texas

Record: 10-6 | Needs: WR, DE, DT, CB, OLB
Sweed is a big target who makes sense for both the Titans and Vince Young. Beside the fact that he already has a rapport with Young, Sweed also gives Tennessee the number one type receiver they lack.

25. Seattle Seahawks -- Dustin Keller, TE Purdue

Record: 10-6 | Needs: TE, WR, DT, S, OL
Keller is climbing up draft boards around the league and although he lacks the size to be an effective in-line blocker, he is an ideal fit in the West Coast offense as a receiver because he can be displaced and moved around in formations and personnel groupings.

26. Jacksonville Jaguars -- Kentwan Balmer, DT N.Carolina

Record: 11-5 | Needs: DE, DT, SS, OT, WR
The Jags could in a variety of directions here but from a value standpoint, Balmer makes sense. At 6-4, 310, he can line-up next to John Henderson and replace the departed Marcus Stroud.

27. San Diego Chargers -- Gosder Cherilus, OT, Boston College

Record: 11-5 | Needs: OT, S, RB, CB, DE
The Chargers need to find a replacement for Shane Olivea and Cherlius who had a good pre-draft workout has the size and wingspan to be effective on the right side. Don’t be surprised if they go running back with Jonathan Stewart.

28. Dallas Cowboys -- DeSean Jackson, WR, California

Record: 13-3 | Needs: WR, CB, G, C, QB, NT
If the Cowboys don’t move both their first rounders, then drafting a young wide receiver here will be a priority. Jackson is an explosive slot option who could give the Boys match-up advantages in spread sets and give OC Jason Garrett more opportunities to be creative. Could be a real weapon as a punt returner.

29. S.F. 49ers (from 13-3 IND) -- Curtis Lofton, ILB Oklahoma

Record: 5-11 | Needs: OLB, OT. WR, G/C, QB
The Niners would love to add Cherlius , but he more than likely will be gone and unless they are willing to move up to get him, they’ll have to go in another direction. Mike Nolan and his defensive coaches love Lofton and rate him higher than the more ballyhooed Jerod Mayo of Tennessee.

30. Green Bay Packers -- Brian Brohm, QB louisville

Record: 13-3 | Needs: CB, QB, TE, OT, S, RB
The Packers could go tight end here with Fred Davis but they will instead roll the dice with Brohm as an insurance policy in the event that Aaron Rodgers does not work out.

31. New England Patriots -- Pick forfeited

32. New York Giants --Jerod Mayo, ILB Tennessee

Record: 10-6 | Needs: S, OLB, CB, WR, G/T, DT
Finding a safety here would be the ideal situation but that’s not likely from a value standpoint so taking the best player on the board, which in this case is mayo, makes sense.
